After the sighting of a giant oarfish off the coast of Taiwan, a series of natural disasters occurred across the globe.
The oarfish, often called the ‘earthquake’ or ‘doomsday’ fish, is believed by some to be a sign of impending calamities like earthquakes and tsunamis. Despite the lack of scientific evidence supporting this belief, the appearance of this rare fish ignited fears of doomsday.
The first disaster to strike after the sighting of the ‘earthquake’ fish was a devastating storm in China’s northeastern Hebei province on August 5th. Named Doksuri, the storm was a former super typhoon and resulted in the most severe rains the country has experienced in over a century.

The storm caused the displacement of over a million people and resulted in around 30 deaths as floods swept through the streets, washing away bridges and highways. The economic damages from the storm were estimated to be around $2.2 billion.
Just three days later, wildfires broke out in Portugal, leading to the evacuation of approximately 1,400 people.
The fires started in the municipality of Odemira and quickly spread south towards the Algarve, a popular tourist destination. Nine firefighters were injured, and several villages and tourist accommodations were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Later in August, Greece experienced a series of wildfires, with 80 incidents recorded since July 17th. These fires resulted in the evacuation of 13 villages and the destruction of several homes.
During the same month, thousands of people were evacuated from Tenerife in the Canary Islands due to widespread fires.

As August came to a close, Hurricane Idalia, a Category 4 storm, wreaked havoc in the southeastern United States.
The hurricane resulted in at least two fatalities, destroyed thousands of homes, and left 300,000 people without power. The University of Florida estimated agricultural losses caused by Hurricane Idalia to be up to $370.9 million.
The series of disasters continued into September with a powerful earthquake striking the Al Haouz province in Morocco. The quake caused the deaths of more than 3,000 people and left thousands injured.
While it is important to note that the appearance of the ‘earthquake’ fish and these subsequent disasters may be purely coincidental, the sequence of events has undoubtedly sparked fear and speculation.
