Illinois has performed poorly in terms of economic inequality among Americans of different racial backgrounds, according to a new study. The state ranked the worst in the nation for racial economic inequality, particularly in terms of the median annual income difference between whites and blacks. WalletHub, a personal finance website, conducted the research and found that Illinois has the fifth largest income gap between white and black residents. The state also ranked poorly in terms of the labor force participation rate and unemployment gap, with the fifth largest racial gap and the second largest gap, respectively.
In addition to these findings, WalletHub’s survey ranked Illinois 40th in the US in terms of poverty rate, 46th in the nation in terms of homeless rate, and 49th with respect to the share of unsheltered homeless.

Dems All About ‘Equity’
Illinois has a special state government agency called the Office of Equity, which is dedicated to improving diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility within the state’s communities, state agencies, and legislators. However, despite these efforts, the state’s ranking in terms of racial economic equality remains poor.
Other Midwestern states also received low rankings in the study. Wisconsin was ranked the second worst after Illinois, while Iowa came in third. On the other hand, Alaska, Arizona, and New Mexico were identified as the states with the highest racial economic equality.
Democrats have used the research findings to highlight historical, social, and structural factors that contribute to the wealth gap. These factors include the denial of education and ownership opportunities for black Americans, as well as tax codes, mandatory sentencing, and income disparities.
