Is Kamala Harris Turning to Gun Control as a Last-Ditch Effort to Restore Her Reputation?

Vice President Kamala Harris is turning her attention to gun control in an apparent effort to enhance her presidential qualifications. This shift comes after a series of failures during her time as vice president, notably her handling of the immigration crisis.

Critics have heavily criticized Harris for her performance as vice president and some have even labeled her the worst vice president in history. Seeking to revive her standing, Harris is now focusing on the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.

Cesar Conda, a Republican strategist and former aide to Vice President Dick Cheney, has been particularly vocal about Harris’s shortcomings. He highlights her appointment as ‘border czar,’ which coincided with a record-breaking number of encounters with illegal immigrants at the border in August. This, according to Conda, is clear evidence of her failure to fulfill her duties effectively.

However, it is not just the immigration crisis that has attracted criticism. Harris’s verbal blunders and infamous laugh have also made her a subject of ridicule. Despite these setbacks, her intentions to run for president are not yet clear.

Harris’s latest focus seems to be the newly established White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Her previous attempts to address the root causes of illegal immigration have been unsuccessful, exacerbating the issue. She now hopes that taking a strong stance on gun control will resonate with Democratic voters and improve her position within the party.

Nevertheless, this move has not been without controversy. Representatives for Harris have disputed claims that she is responsible for the Biden administration’s immigration failures. Nonetheless, she continues to face scrutiny from Republicans, including potential 2024 candidates Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis.

Paul Henderson, a former aide to Harris when she served as San Francisco’s district attorney, believes that now is the time for her to regroup. He suggests that her leadership on gun control could serve as a rallying call for Democratic voters. However, doubts remain within her own party about whether she is the right choice for Biden’s running mate in 2024, let alone a potential presidential candidate in 2028.

Ultimately, Kamala Harris’s shift towards gun control appears to be a strategic move aimed at salvaging her reputation and strengthening her qualifications for a presidential run. Only time will tell if this will be enough to overcome her previous failures and win over voters.
