Kraft Heinz, one of the world’s leading food conglomerates, has recalled more than 83,000 cases of its Kraft Singles American cheese slices. The recall was announced on September 20 due to concerns that parts of the wrapper could stick to the cheese, posing a choking hazard.
The recall is a precautionary measure after a faulty wrapping machine caused a thin strip of film to remain on the slice even after the wrapper was removed. The company warns that if this film sticks to the slice and is not removed, it could potentially cause gagging or choking.

This recall affects a limited number of customers in the United States who purchased the 16-ounce Kraft Singles American Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product with a ‘Best When Used By’ date between January 10, 2024, and January 27, 2024. The 3-pound multipacks with a ‘Best When Used By’ date between January 9, 2024, and January 13, 2024 are also being recalled.
The company has already fixed the faulty machine, but advises customers not to consume the affected products. Instead, customers are asked to return them to the store for an exchange or refund. Those concerned about their purchased products can also contact Kraft Heinz directly for a refund.
The issue was brought to the company’s attention after receiving complaints about plastic being stuck to the cheese slices. Kraft Heinz has been redesigning the packaging for Kraft Singles to make it easier to open and prevent such incidents.

The updated packaging, expected to be rolled out in late 2023, features a redesigned flap that is thicker and easier to open. It is unclear whether the recent issues with Kraft Singles are related to the old or new packaging design. Kraft Singles, a staple product purchased by around forty percent of US households, is being reinvigorated as part of the company’s efforts to boost sales.
