The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the nation’s largest police union, has officially endorsed Donald Trump for a second term in a significant move for the 2024 presidential race. The endorsement, announced by Patrick Yoes, the FOP’s national president on September 6, represents over 377,000 members. The FOP cited Trump’s strong stance on law enforcement and border security as key reasons for their support, showcasing his enduring popularity among police officers and law enforcement groups nationwide.
Trump, during the FOP’s National Board of Trustees meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, outlined his plans to address crime in American cities. He vowed to crack down on violent crime, impose stricter penalties for illegal immigration, and reintroduce policing methods like stop-and-frisk to reduce crime rates. Additionally, he expressed his commitment to combating street gangs and drug cartels with federal forces along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Contrary to Trump’s approach, his opponent Kamala Harris has faced criticism from law enforcement groups for her past support of police reform and progressive criminal justice policies. Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, have not received the same level of support from police unions, with Harris notably not meeting with the FOP ahead of their endorsement decision.
The endorsement process at FOP involves all 46 state lodges, giving members a voice in the candidate selection. Trump’s engagement with the union through meetings and comprehensive responses to law enforcement issues played a vital role in securing the FOP’s endorsement, where Harris’ campaign only provided general outlines of their positions.
Trump positioned himself as the “law and order” candidate, emphasizing his focus on addressing illegal immigration, rising crime rates, and strengthening police forces. He criticized lenient policies towards violent criminals and promised a shift in approach if elected president.
Moreover, the FOP’s endorsement adds to a pattern of law enforcement unions supporting Trump’s campaign, further solidifying his platform as the preferred candidate among law enforcement professionals. This backing is expected to resonate with voters who prioritize public safety and addressing crime in the upcoming election.
