Mike Pence: An Unexpected Star Witness in Trump’s Jan. 6 Trial

In an unexpected turn of events, former Vice President Mike Pence could emerge as a significant witness in the trial of his former running mate, Donald Trump. Despite trailing Trump by a large margin in the polls, Pence might prove to be a formidable opponent in the courtroom.

Pence has found himself in the spotlight due to allegations made against Trump in the indictment. The former vice president publicly declared that he prioritized the Constitution over loyalty to a single individual, clearly referencing his refusal to support Trump’s claims of election fraud.

The trial will be overseen by U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan, an Obama-appointed judge. The indictment, authored by DOJ’s special counsel Jack Smith, portrays Pence as the key figure who rejected Trump’s “deliberately fraudulent claims” of election fraud.

Interestingly, in a March 2021 op-ed, Pence highlighted significant voting irregularities and instances of officials disregarding state election laws. However, his potential role as a star witness in Trump’s trial may put him at odds with his own party.

The indictment references Pence’s “contemporary messages” and provides detailed accounts of private conversations between him and Trump.
