A rollercoaster at the Forest County Festival in Crandon, Wisconsin malfunctioned mid-ride, leaving eight passengers stranded upside down for several hours.
The ‘Fireball’ ride experienced a mechanical failure as it was descending from its vertical loop, causing it to abruptly halt and trap its riders in an inverted position.
Rescue Operation Challenges for Trapped Riders
Emergency services were alerted to the incident and initiated a challenging rescue operation. The height of the ride and the passengers’ upside-down position complicated the rescue process.
Special equipment, including three ladder trucks, was needed to reach the stranded passengers. It took around 45 minutes for a truck capable of reaching heights over 100 feet to arrive at the scene with the necessary equipment.

The rescue operation faced additional complexity due to the ride’s safety equipment release mechanism. All individuals in a car needed to be properly secured before the safety equipment could be released, making the operation more meticulous and time-consuming.
Successful Rescue Frees Trapped Passengers
The rescue operation was lengthy and complex. The first passenger was not returned to solid ground until approximately two hours after the malfunction. It then took an additional hour and 40 minutes to carefully extract and safely return all remaining passengers.

Scott Brass, an onlooker who witnessed the incident, shared his observations via social media. He mentioned that five of the eight trapped passengers were children. One courageous young girl instructed rescuers to prioritize an older man who was visibly struggling. This act of selflessness in such a distressing situation highlighted the innate compassion that emerges in critical moments of shared adversity.
