An UN-backed report released on Thursday reveals shocking details of war crimes committed by Russia during its yearlong invasion of Ukraine. The report, conducted by three international experts appointed by the Human Rights Council, concluded that Russia has committed war crimes and likely crimes against humanity.
The findings include the summary execution of a 14-year-old boy, sexual violence against girls as young as 4 and women as old as 82, and the brutal beating and public humiliation of a priest in his village. These acts violate international humanitarian and human rights laws.
The report also highlights Russia’s indiscriminate bombings of areas with civilian populations, targeted attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, as well as torture, unlawful confinement, summary executions, and rape. People of all genders and ages have been affected by these violations.
While the report may not have a direct impact on Russia, it increases pressure for the country to be held accountable by the International Criminal Court. At the very least, it serves as a historical record of the abuses committed during the investigation, despite Russia’s lack of cooperation.
As one individual, whose father was executed by Russian military members, expressed to the investigators, “They punished innocent people; now those who are guilty, if they are still alive, need to be punished to the fullest extent.”
