Texas Woman Accused of Federal Charges for Threatening Judge Appointed by Obama

A Texas woman named Abigail Jo Shry, 43, has been charged with federal offenses after allegedly threatening to kill an Obama-appointed judge and a Democratic congresswoman. Shry’s arrest has had an impact on the community in Alvin, Texas, where she resides.

The case revolves around Judge Tanya S. Chutkan, who is set to preside over a controversial 2020 election interference case involving former President Trump.

On August 5th, Shry left a threatening voicemail targeting Judge Chutkan. This incident has raised concerns about the safety of public officials and the escalating political tensions in the country.

Shry’s threats did not stop at Judge Chutkan. According to a criminal complaint filed in the Southern District of Texas, she also targeted Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) and used racially offensive slurs. These threats demonstrate a lack of respect for the dignity and safety of elected officials and raise concerns about the state of political discourse in the nation.

A court document obtained by WUSA9 reveals the chilling details of the threats made during a phone call to Judge Chutkan’s chambers in Washington, DC. The call, traced back to Shry’s phone number, included threats against the LGBTQ community and other Democratic parties. Shry threatened to kill anyone who went after former President Trump, including Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, all Democrats in Washington D.C., and all people in the LGBTQ community.

During a preliminary detention hearing, Magistrate Judge Sam S. Sheldon decided to hold Shry without bond. Shry’s previous criminal history, including four charges in the past year related to similar conduct, influenced this decision. It underscores the seriousness of the charges against her and the potential danger she poses to public officials.

The investigation into the case revealed that the threatening call was made from Shry’s cellphone. When Department of Homeland Security (DHS) special agents visited her residence in Alvin, Texas, Shry admitted to making the call to Judge Chutkan’s chambers. However, she claimed to have no plans to travel to Washington, DC, or Houston to carry out her threats.
