Former President Trump has emerged as the clear favorite in a recent New York Post-Leger poll.
The poll, conducted after this week’s GOP presidential debate, shows Trump outpacing his closest primary rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, by a staggering 61 to 9 percent. Even more impressive, Trump also leads former President Joe Biden in a hypothetical general election matchup, 44 to 41 percent.
The poll results highlight Trump’s enduring popularity within the Republican party, despite facing legal challenges from Democrat prosecutors at both federal and state levels.
The poll dispels the notion that these legal cases are part of a strategy to make Trump the Republican nominee, only to set him up for defeat in the general election.

Interestingly, only three percent of Democrats surveyed expressed a desire for Trump to be the 2024 GOP presidential nominee.
Their top choices were former Rep. Liz Cheney (WY) with 16 percent and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie with 11 percent. However, the preferences of Democratic voters may not necessarily align with the eventual choice of the Republican Party.
The poll was meticulously conducted over Wednesday night and Thursday, with a sample size of 1,800 online respondents aged 18 years or older. Of these, 534 had watched the Republican primary debate.
The poll has a modest 2.3 percent margin of error, ensuring a high degree of accuracy in its findings. The Republican voter preference sample consisted of 658 registered voters.
Among Republicans who watched all or part of Wednesday’s debate, 23 percent believed that Ohio businessman Vivek Ramaswamy emerged as the winner, while 21 percent favored Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
When asked about their preferred Republican candidate for president in 2024, the responses were as follows: Trump 61, DeSantis 9, Ramaswamy 5, Pence 5, Scott 3, Haley 2, Christie 1, Cheney 0, and Hurd 0.

Trump’s appeal extends to young adult voters in both the GOP primary and general election.
Among those aged 18 to 34 years, Trump secured 58 percent of the vote, significantly outperforming Pence and DeSantis, who each garnered 6 percent and 5 percent respectively.
In a general election scenario, Trump would receive support from 48 percent of young adults, compared to Biden’s 34 percent.
The poll also revealed a gender-based split in support for Trump. In a head-to-head matchup against Biden, Trump leads among men by 47 to 41 percent. Among women, however, the race is neck-and-neck, with both candidates tied at 41 percent.
In conclusion, the poll results underscore Trump’s continued dominance in the Republican party and his potential to once again lead the GOP ticket in 2024. Despite the challenges he faces, Trump’s popularity, particularly among young adults, suggests he remains a formidable force in American politics.
