In a tragic incident that has left the aviation community in mourning, a long-serving pilot from LATAM Airlines lost his life during a flight.
The incident occurred on Monday while LATAM flight 505 was en route from Miami, Florida to Santiago, Chile.
Captain Iván Andaur Santibáñez, a dedicated professional with 25 years of experience at LATAM Airlines, was the pilot who suffered a sudden medical emergency and tragically passed away while operating the flight.
The 56-year-old pilot began to feel unwell three hours into the journey, leading to a series of events that ended in tragedy.

As the flight progressed, Captain Santibáñez’s condition worsened, and he collapsed in the aircraft’s bathroom. The crew immediately responded, providing emergency treatment in an effort to stabilize him.
Despite their best efforts, the situation escalated, necessitating an unscheduled landing. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the decision was made to divert the flight to the nearest airport.
Therefore, LATAM flight 505, carrying 271 passengers, made an unexpected landing at Tocumen International Airport in Panama. This decision was made to provide immediate medical attention to the pilot.
Upon landing, emergency services responded quickly, providing life-saving assistance. However, despite their efforts and the initial emergency treatment provided by the crew, Captain Santibáñez was pronounced dead upon arrival.
