Is the FDA Examining Potential Health Risks of iPhone 12 Radiation?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently examining reports suggesting that iPhone 12 may emit radiation levels that could be potentially harmful to health. This comes after iPhone 12 sales were temporarily suspended in Europe due to safety concerns.

Previous studies have raised the possibility of health risks related to mobile phone radiation, including cancer and fertility issues.

However, many researchers have expressed skepticism about these findings, arguing that the tests were conducted on animals and required extremely high levels of exposure to cause any harm.

Maria Feychting, a professor of epidemiology at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, stated that there is currently no strong evidence linking exposure to electromagnetic fields during mobile phone use to adverse health effects.

However, she did acknowledge the need for further research, particularly concerning the higher frequencies used by 5G technology.

In France, regulators found that the iPhone 12 emitted radiation levels 40% above the permissible limits when placed next to the human body, leading to a temporary halt in iPhone 12 sales in the country.

Nevertheless, French digital minister Jean-Noel Barrot emphasized that the device’s radiation levels were significantly lower than those proven to potentially cause harm according to scientific studies. He also suggested that a software update could address the issue.

Apple responded to these concerns by stating that its devices comply with global standards. The company plans to release a software update specifically for users in France to align with the testing protocol used by French regulators.

Apple clarified that this action is related to the specific testing protocol and not a safety concern.

The iPhone 12, released in September 2020, has sold over 100 million units worldwide. However, Apple is now planning to phase out the model following the release of the iPhone 15.

In a statement to the Daily Mail, the FDA said it is reviewing the available information regarding radiation concerns associated with the iPhone 12. The agency, however, did not comment on specific studies or test results.

Instead, the FDA stated that it evaluates them as part of the overall evidence to further its understanding of a specific issue and help protect public health.

While Apple has assured consumers that its devices are safe, the ongoing review by the FDA underscores the importance of ensuring consumer safety in a technology-dominated era.
