The Queen’s death has resulted in changes to the line of succession and titles for members of the royal family. Prince William, the King’s eldest son, is now next in line to the throne, followed by his three children in order of age.
As Charles and Camilla become King and Queen Consort, William and Catherine have also inherited their previous titles, becoming the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge.
In his speech on Friday, the King officially bestowed the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales upon William and Catherine, which is customary for the heir apparent. It is expected that a public investiture ceremony, similar to the one for Charles in 1969, will take place in the future.
Following Charles’ accession to the throne, the status of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s two children, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, has also been elevated.
According to established royal protocols from 1917, the children and grandchildren of the monarch are entitled to the titles HRH and prince or princess. Therefore, Harry and Meghan’s children are now known as Prince Archie and Princess Lillibet.
In his speech, the King made sure to acknowledge Harry and Meghan, who have moved to California after stepping back from royal duties, expressing his love for them as they continue to establish their lives overseas.
He also expressed gratitude towards his wife, Camilla, recognizing her unwavering support both personally and as the Queen Consort in fulfilling the responsibilities of her new role.
