In a letter addressed to Governor Maura Healey, the Select Board implored the state not to use the Yarmouth Resort motel as a housing site for migrants.
They cited several reasons for their opposition, including the motel’s status as a nuisance to the town, its lack of an occupancy permit, and the property being under a cease-and-desist order.
Town Administrator Robert Whritenour voiced his concerns about the lack of communication from the state, which he believes is exacerbating the problem.
He described the situation as “brutal,” highlighting the vitriol directed towards local, state, and federal officials. Whritenour also noted the fear permeating the town, with residents worried about the future of their beloved Cape Cod.
During a town meeting, one woman poignantly expressed her fears, stating, “We fear we’re losing Cape Cod.”
She emphasized the unique beauty and special nature of Cape Cod, urging the officials to work with other towns to present a unified front against this issue. This sentiment resonates with many residents who feel that their town’s character is under threat.
