The death certificate for Queen Elizabeth II was officially published on Thursday. It revealed that the cause of death for the 96-year-old monarch was listed as “old age.”
The National Records of Scotland published an extract of the entry in the Register of Deaths, confirming that the Queen passed away at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire on September 8.
According to the certificate, the official time of her death was recorded as 3:10 p.m. This was nearly two hours before her children Princes Andrew and Edward, and grandson Prince William, arrived at the castle. It was also almost three and a half hours before her death was publicly announced.
At the time of her passing, her other two children, King Charles III and Princess Anne, were already present with her. Princess Anne’s signature appears on the death certificate.
The certificate lists Windsor Castle as the Queen’s usual residence. Her occupation is simply stated as “Her Majesty The Queen.”
In addition to the Queen’s information, the death certificate also includes the names and royal positions of her late husband, Prince Philip, as well as her father and mother, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
The medical practitioner who signed the death certificate was Douglass Glass, who had served in the role of Apothecary to the Household at Balmoral since at least 2009.
It’s worth noting that the certification guidelines by the NHS Education for Scotland state that certifying doctors should not list “old age” as the sole cause of death unless they have treated the deceased for an extended period, observed a gradual decline in health, are unaware of any identifiable disease or injury contributing to the death, and the patient was 80 years old or above.
